Arjun Singh’s only daughter, Veena Singh has contested Lok Sabha elections from Sidhi. Arjun Singh’s son Ajay Singh Aka Rahul Bhaiya is a former leader of opposition in the Madhya Pradesh assembly. His grandson Kunwar Aishwarya Singh has been married to Devyani Rana,who is grand daughter of former Prime Minister of Nepal, Shri Tin Maharaja Mohan Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana. She is the daughter of Nepalese politician Pashupati Shamsher Jung Bahadur Rana and Ushrajje Scindia, daughter of Gwalior King George Jivajirao Scindia. His another grandson through Ajay Singh is Bollywood actor Arunoday Singh. Arjun Singh was admitted to the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Delhi with neurological problems of chest and died on March 4, 2011 at the age of 80, due to heart attack.
Arjun Singh started his political career, not with any party, but from his own personality. In 1952, Jawaharlal Nehru, in Churahat then Vindhya Pradesh, had reached for election campaign, where on the stage, he elected Arjun Singh’s father, Rao Shivbahadur Singh, as the candidate for the Assembly elections. But after reaching Rewa from Churhat, Jawaharlal Nehru again declared that his party has no candidate , Thereafter Rao Shivbahadur Singh Independent contested but he could not win the election. Which had a serious effect on Arjun Singh, and he jumped into the field of politics with his own personality, and never looked back.
Then Arjun Singh began his career in Indian politics as a member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1957-85. From September 1963 to December 1967 Arjun Singh worked as Minister of State for Agriculture, General Administration Department (GAD) and Information & Public Relations, Government of Madhya Pradesh . In 1967 Minister of Planning and Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh.In the year 1972-1977 served as Minister of Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh .
Then in 1977 to 1980 Arjun Singh was Leader of Opposition, Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. In November 1985 to January 1986 he worked as Minister of Commerce, Government of India, Thereafter from October 1986 – February 1988 he was Minister of Communications, Government of India. Then Again in 1988-91 he was elected from the same seat. He served as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh three times, Union minister and Governor of Punjab once for a short period. As Governor of Punjab, he worked for the Rajiv-Longowal Accord for peace in Punjab.
In 1996, Arjun Singh formed the All India Indira Congress, presided over by Narayan Dutt Tiwari, however his party lost from Satna in the 11th Lok Sabha elections. His return to Congress the following year saw him lose out from Hoshangabad at the 12th Lok Sabha elections in April 1998. Arjun Singh was then elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2000. Besides politics, he is also involved in social work, being associated with various social and cultural organizations supporting the cause. For his immense contribution to Indian Politics, Arjun Singh was awarded the ‘Outstanding Parliamentarian Award’ for the year 2000. He later became Union Minister of Human Resource Development in the Manmohan Singh cabinet from 2004 to 2009.
