Life History of Sheila Dikshit
Apowerful administrator and leader, she has been elected Chief Minister of Delhi thrice since 1998. She has a record of leading her party to three consecutive victories in New Delhi constituency in the Legislative Assembly of Delhi. Sheila Dikshit is the second female Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj. Sheila Dikshit’s entry into Indian politics was accidental. Sheila Dikshit’s foray into the Indian political world was by chance.
Her father-in-law, was a renowned activist during India’s independence struggle. Late Uma Shankar Dikshit, was a famous activist and actively participated in India’s independence fight. He eventually became a union cabinet minister in Indira Gandhi’s cabinet. While he was serving his cabinet post, Sheila Dikshit assisted her father-in-law. The then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi appreciated her management skills and later as an Indian delegate of the United Nations Commission on the issue of status of women.
This marked her entry in Indian politics, which led her eventually to become the chief minister of Delhi. In the 1970s, Sheila Dikshit was the chairperson of the Young Women’s Association. During this period, she helped set up two of the most successful working women’s hostel in Delhi. After that, Dikshit also worked for Garment Exporters’ Association as an executive secretary.
Sheila Dikshit represented the Kannauj Parliamentary Constituency of Uttar Pradesh from 1984 to 1989 and as a member of the Lok Sabha she served on the Estimates Committee of the Lok Sabha. Dikshit also represented India at the United Nations Commission on Status of Women for five years from 1984 to 1989 and Dikshit was also Union Minister from 1986 to 1989, first as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and later as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office.
And Sheila Dikshit was president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee led her party to victory in the Assembly Elections in 1998. In Uttar Pradesh, Sheila Dikshit and her 82 colleagues were jailed in August 1990 for 23 days by the state government when she led a movement against the atrocities being committed on women. Sheila Dikshit served as the chief minister of Delhi for three consecutive terms, lasting from 1998 to 2013. She was the second woman chief minister of Delhi, after succeeding the previous Delhi chief minister, Sushma Swaraj. Dikshit is an alumni of the Miranda House College in Delhi and holds a Master of Arts degree.
Sheila Dikshit was honored for Doctor of Philosophy
She has also been honored with the Doctor of Philosophy (Honouris Causa) from the University of Delhi. As Chief Minister of Delhi, Dikshit was awarded the Best Chief Minister of India by the Journalist Association of India in 2008 and the following year she was honoured with Politician of the Year award by the NDTV. Sheila Dikshit party was wiped out in the Delhi Legislative Assembly election, 2013 and Arvind Kejriwal founder of Aam Admi party won the election in the New Delhi Assembly constituency by a margin of 25,864 votes.
Dikshit resigned from the post of the Chief Minister of Delhi 8 December after she lost the Delhi Assembly election held in December 2013, but remained the caretaker Chief Minister of Delhi till the new Government was sworn in on 28 December 2013. After which, Dikshit has also served as the Governor of Kerala. She assumed office on 4 March 2014 and resigned on 26 August 2014. The decision of the INC party to appoint her as the Governor of Kerala was announced by the Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
